North Star Pathways Mission: Empowering youth and their families through Person Centered Thinking, Community Partnering and the Employment First Model

North Star Pathways would like to provide person centered plans, community experiences, volunteer opportunities, job skills training, partnership building opportunities, mentor experiences and so much more to our vulnerable youth, we need your help to do it!

North Star Pathways (NSP) is a nonprofit agency providing person centered experiences to at risk youth including but not limited to youth who experience developmental disabilities, foster youth, and youth living in poverty, ages 11-17, in Lane County. NSP Enrichment Program is the only nonprofit program in Lane County that service all vulnerable youth through person centered experiences. NSP’s founding principle is that all young people are capable, gifted and essential members of society and with sufficient supports, person centered thinking, opportunities, and community partnering all youth can reach their North Star/ full potential.

NSP will facilitate a person centered plan for youth participants. Person Centered Planning practice targets the demographic of the population who are not able to utilize and/or benefit from the ‘usual and customary” methods of service delivery in our society. It is an evidence based practice that is a powerful and useful tool capable of increasing a person’s self-determination as well as their own level of independence. The plan will dictate the opportunities available to our youth, based on the individuals, interests, passions, likes, and dislikes. Through volunteering, community partnering, and community experiences, youth will gain the skills needed and relationships needed to be successful employees, thus gaining confidence and a sense of belonging in their community.

North Star Pathways Enrichment program will organize weekly community outings that are based on the various interests determined by our client’s PCP. Participants will be accompanied on all outings by a trained NSP staff person. These excursions will include (but are not limited to) touring local businesses, job skills training sessions and participating in community and fund raising events. Once an individual has a completed PCP, physically explored interest options, and training and supports have been successfully implemented, a volunteer placement or gainful employment position will be reviewed by their support team. Continual support and guidance will be provided subsequent to a volunteer/job placement.

NSP believes that helping youth reach their full potential will create a significant shift away from generational poverty, neglect and isolation. Over time, NSP will create an employment resource network of community partners and PCP experiences/opportunities that will be invaluable resources for at risk youth, business owners and our community at large.

“Participating in North Star Pathways after school enrichment program would mean everything to my foster children. They long for community inclusion, person centered experiences, and camaraderie. My children want to succeed, learn, explore and feel capable and NSP can help provide the supports necessary for successful experiences in the community, with future employers and peers. I truly believe North Star Pathways would be a life changing opportunity for my foster children.”
